Intelligent energy management is one of the main pillars of the BMW eDrive Concept. This system coordinates the interaction of all drive components to combine the best possible efficiency with great driving dynamics.

In situations in which the combustion engine would have low power efficiency, the system actually makes it produce additional power to create electricity for the battery via the electric motor/generator, which can later be used for electric driving or to efficiently support the combustion engine. It also controls the electric motor / generator, so that kinetic energy is transformed into electrical energy during coasting and when braking.

The eDrive button allows the driver to choose between several eDrive modes:

  • AUTO eDrive: The intelligent BMW EfficientDynamics system determines the most efficient combination of electric motor and combustion engine usage depending on driving speed and battery charging status.
  • MAX eDrive: Purely electric mode. The driver can press the accelerator to its full extent without activating the combustion engine on to a top speed of 120 km/h. When greater power is required, the combustion engine can be switched on any time via the gear lever or by pressing the accelerator to kickdown.
  • Save Battery / Battery Control: When battery charge is low, this mode enables the battery to be charged by the combustion engine or allows the charging status to be maintained. This way, the driver can save the battery capacity for pure electric driving later.
  • Adaptive (740Le only): With the destination keyed in to the navigation system, predictive energy management analyses the planned route to optimize electric driving mode usage to best maximise overall efficiency.

In Malaysia, ChargeNow service is available for all BMW iPerformance plug-in hybrid owners. It comprises of a ChargeNow card that grants holders straightforward access to partner charging stations, C‍‍‍hargEV, offered through BMW Group Malaysia’s partnership with Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech).ChargEV stations are already operational in 227 strategic locations throughout Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Kedah, Melaka, and Johor.

The vehicle can be conveniently charged at home at a conventional 230V power socket from empty to full in less than four hours. All BMW iPerformance plug-in hybrid models have their charging ports behind a flap on the front left side panel.
