Motorsports was created out of the human desire to compete and outdo each other. As the sport grew, however, it didn’t take long for people to realize that racing is an expensive business needing hugely deep pockets to rapidly replenish consumables ranging from fuel to tyres and spare parts.
It was from this need that the concept of sponsorship was born. Teams would go to corporations, ask them for money in exchange for brand exposure. This then, is the genesis of why racing cars are dressed in attractive and vibrant liveries. The cars need to stand out in order to attract the photographer’s lens, to in turn give their sponsors the eyeballs they crave.
Over the years, the practice of race car livery has become a life and art of its own. Many competing cars become inextricably associated with their iconic racing liveries, inspiring fans for generations.
