The TransBorneo Adventure
FITTING THE TYRES
As the sun sets on a frantic month of preparation, one thing is clear: the clock is racing against me. In less than 30 days, I'll embark on an exhilarating 2,000-kilometer road trip across Borneo, from Telok Melano, Sarawak, all the way to The Tip of Borneo, Kudat, Sabah, in my Aston Martin Rapide S. This trip marks my first time driving my own personal car in Borneo.
With the road ahead winding through lush rainforests, remote villages, and rugged terrain, the rush to finalize every detail is as intense as the excitement for the adventure itself. As I hurry to book my flight and get my car ready, the challenge is clear: driving my 2-tonne luxury sedan on an epic cross-island expedition. Before this trip, I have put Continental's SC7 tyres to the ultimate test. To truly evaluate their performance, I've dispatched my Aston Martin Rapide S to Kuching, preparing for a grand TransBorneo adventure.
Though their stiff sidewalls and somewhat grainy ride quality might not be ideal for daily comfort, they deliver unparalleled control and confidence on these demanding roads.
Upon arrival in Kuching, I reconnect with my Rapide S. This trip spans approximately 2,200 kilometers across East Malaysia, and joining me are friends from the Evo Club Borneo - Alex Stmrock with his formidable DB7 Vantage V12 and Julian with his Porsche Cayman. As we embark, the SC7 tyres immediately make their mark, offering exceptional control and grip. The tyres' robust sidewalls provide a direct, tactile connection to the road, enhancing the driving experience. Designed to endure 2,000 kilometers of diverse terrain, these tyres are proving their worth from the very start.
Driving through Sarawak, I'm struck by the quality of the roads—smooth, toll-free, and surpassing many found in Kuala Lumpur. The Maserati in our convoy hums along effortlessly, its deep-throated roar adding to the adventure's thrill. Meanwhile, the RS6 darts in and out of view, its speed and handling a testament to its engineering prowess. Our route takes us through Sibu, a surprisingly large town, and onward to Bintulu, navigating a high-speed stretch from Mulu to Miri. Throughout, the SC7 tyres display impeccable traction and stability, even at elevated speeds. Though their stiff sidewalls and somewhat grainy ride quality might not be ideal for daily comfort, they deliver unparalleled control and confidence on these demanding roads.
For any serious driver embarking on a challenging journey, the Continental SC7 tyres are undeniably worth a try. Their superior control, grip, and performance make them an excellent choice for adventures like the TransBorneo. If a grand expedition is on your horizon, ensure your vehicle is fitted with these exceptional tyres. Here's to Continental for enabling this extraordinary experience.
